Major Keys for the 49ers Offensive Success

As the 49ers gear up for their second season in Conference-USA, a lot of surrounding questions remain as to how Queens City’s newest football team will handle the competition. Charlotte, whom lost 10 straight games, hopes to avenge their horrid Conference-USA initiation. Charlotte served as a pushover on most team’s schedules last season after failing to earn a win in Conference-USA.

Now in theory, this season Charlotte should be better suited to play in college football’s highest division this season. But in order for this team to achieve any success, a few key players must shine. Last season, the 49ers were unable to generate much productivity aside from the first two games. A trio of quarterbacks where were often sub-par an unable to convince coach Lambert that they belonged under center.

With that being said, a new face has joined the 49er franchise and is expected to be the starter week one. Kevin Olsen, junior college transfer, will get his chance to win the 49er fan base and lead the charging offense this season. Olsen is just the threat that the 49ers need. With a cannon for an arm and pinpoint accuracy, Olsen will spread the field giving Charlotte the consistency it lacked at quarterback last season. But to spread the field you need a receiver with exceptional hands and elite speed.

Senior Austin Duke will serve as that outside threat. Duke had 53 receptions, reeling in 534 yards and five touchdowns last season. His speed and big play potential is the exact asset to accompany Olsen down the field.

But to offset the threat in the air the 49ers will rely heavily on running back Kalif Phillips. Phillips was by far Charlotte’s best offensive weapon last season. The workhorse tallied in 960 rushing yards and five total touchdowns last season. The team only went as far as he went, literally. Unfortunately, Phillips was plagued by late season injuries, prohibiting him from capping off a strong season. However, this season he is ready to imprint his name amongst Conference USA’s elite.

This triple threat on offense will definitely be a respectable force in Conference USA. With another year under their belt, Duke and Phillips know what is expected of this 49ers offense. Coach Lambert hopes that Kevin Olsen will be the missing piece that will fire up the offense and wins games down the stretch. These three will carry have the duty of carrying the offense. Lets hope they’re up for the challenge. If they can generate success week one against ACC foe Louisville, then lighting up Conference-USA will definitely be in the near future.
