Charlotte shut out at Wake

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Charlotte 49ers registered just seven hits and were shut out for the first time in 73 straight games, dating back to the start of the 2009 season in a 14-0 loss at Wake Forest Tuesday night at Gene Hooks Field. The loss drops Charlotte to 15-6 on the year, ending a seven-game win streak. The Demon Deacons improve to 9-17 with the win.
Wake's run total was a season high and the Deacons put together their second shutout of the season, with both coming in the last three games.

The Demon Deacons scored in each of the first four innings to pull away from Charlotte. Wake put up three in the first on four singles and a walk against freshman starter Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS), who has allowed two or more earned runs in each of his seven appearances this year.
A single and a home run put up two in the second, the latter coming by outfielder Ryan Semeniuk.
Wake scored a run in the third with no hits, including a strikeout victim reaching on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to score the run later in the inning.
Three doubles keyed a six-run fourth for Charlotte, including one by Semeniuk to lead off the inning.
Two hits and two walks allowed two more to score in the seventh for Wake Forest to finish the scoring.
The Niners hit two doubles and drew six walks in the game, with two runners reaching third base, but the Deacon pitching staff was clutch, holding Charlotte to an 0-12 night with runners in scoring position.
Shive took the loss for Charlotte (1-2). He gave up the first five runners for Charlotte on six hits and five walks in an inning and a third.
Wake starter Justin Van Grouw got the win on a shortened appearance. He pitches the first three innings, allowing three hits and two walks, recording four strikeouts.
Charlotte outfielder Cory Tilton (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope HS) had a team-high two hits for Charlotte.
The Niners return home to Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium for four games, starting Wednesday night against USC Upstate. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Charlotte will host Massachusetts in an A-10 weekend series, beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m.
NOTES: Charlotte last game without scoring a run was February 21, 2009, in a 4-0 loss at Clemson… The Niners have not been shutout by Wake Forest in their last 26 meetings, dating back to a 6-0 home loss on March 26, 2006…
