A program source confirmed the news to Niner Report on Monday night.
Thompson suffered a grade-3 tear of his right ACL in November of 2011 and missed his senior season. The 6-6 forward also missed the 2010-11 season after tearing his left ACL in a pickup basketball game.
Following his latest injury, it was reported by the Washington Post that Thompson was eligible for a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA.
Thompson averaged 7.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game during his junior year with the Hokies. Thompson also considered Winthrop.
