Charlotte, NC -- Charlotte 49ers head men’s basketball coach Mark Price announced the 49ers 2016-17 schedule which features 15 home games in Halton Arena.
“We are excited about our 2016-17 schedule,” Price said. “We have a challenging non-conference schedule which will prepare us for Conference USA play. We look forward to the challenge of competing in Conference USA.”
Charlotte plays six of their first eight games in Halton Arena. The non-conference schedule begins with a home game against Newberry (November 11). Then, the 49ers play Elon on the road (November 14). The 49ers return home for two straight games against East Carolina (November 17) and USC Upstate (November 22). Then, Charlotte plays cross-county rival Davidson, a 2016 NIT participant, on the road (November 26). The 49ers round of the month of November with home games against Appalachian State (November 28) and James Madison (November 30).
The 49ers begin the month of December with a home game against PAC-12 Conference foe Oregon State (December 3), who was a 2016 NCAA Tournament participant. Then, the 49ers begin a four-year home and home series on the road at ACC foe Wake Forest (December 6). Charlotte plays SEC foe Florida (December 17), a 2016 NIT participant, in the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Florida. The 49ers conclude their non-conference schedule in Baltimore, Maryland against Big Ten foe Maryland (December 20), a 2016 NCAA Tournament participant.
The 18-game Conference USA schedule, which features nine home and nine away games, begins on New Year's Eve as the 49ers play North Texas in Halton Arena.
Charlotte plays five Conference USA opponents twice over the course of the league schedule as the 49ers have both home and away games against Marshall (January 7 and February 25), North Texas (December 31 and January 26), Old Dominion (January 21 and February 18), Rice (January 2 and January 28) and WKU (January 5 and February 23).
The remainder of the Conference USA schedule features home games against Louisiana Tech (January 12), Southern Miss (January 14), Florida Atlantic (February 2) and FIU (February 4) and road games at reigning Conference USA regular-season champs UAB (February 9) and reigning Conference USA tournament champs Middle Tennessee (February 11). The 49ers finish off the regular-season with a road trip to Texas to play UTSA (March 2) and UTEP (March 4).
UAB and the city of Birmingham will also serve as the host for the Conference USA Tournament for the third straight season. The 2017 championship will be held March 8-11 in Legacy Arena.
Coach Price and the 49ers welcome back six letterwinners led by guards senior Braxton Ogbueze (14.5 ppg) and sophomores Jon Davis (11.7 ppg) and Andrien White (10.7 ppg).
