Catching up with Mitch Mullis in the offseason

Mitch Mullis hasn’t been locked in a gym since his high school basketball season ended a few months ago.
The 6-foot-7-inch forward has done his fair share of working out and shooting hundreds of jump shots no doubt, but he has also found time to endeavor in more relaxing sports as well.

“I’ve been doing some fishing,” said Mullis, Charlotte lone 2005 commitment thus far. “I have done a lot of working out, but I have been catching up on some fishing too.”
Mullis has not only changed sports temporarily, but he’s also changed AAU teams permanently. Mullis had originally decided to play with the Kappa Magic, but recent a change of heart has him suiting up for the Charlotte Aces.
"I just liked the coaching staff there, they had a more relaxed system,” he said. “I thought with me going to Charlotte it would be good to run with a team from there.”
With the move Mullis will be teaming up with yet another Niner target for ’05 in 6-foot Garinger High School point guard Jeremy Goode.
“Jeremy’s a good player,” said Mullis. “He’s lightning quick and just really knows how to play.”
Mullis and the Aces begin pool play this weekend in Concord, and he’s hoping an AAU filled summer against stiff competition will get him more ready for New Hampton Prep basketball next season.
“My first trip is in August and we have camp for a week,” said an excited Mullis. “All of the old players like Rashard McCants and Darius Songalia come back during that week. I start school there in September.”
Mullis last graced Charlotte with his presence during the Final Four and during his visit he got to play a little ball with his future teammates as well as the departing seniors.
“I mostly played with the seniors,” said Mullis. “I had to guard big Calvin. I always get stuck guarding Cal for some reason. He’s a big guy, but I did good against him.”
While some Niner fans are just dying to see if EJ Drayton lives up to the hype or how well Leemire Goldwire runs the point for 2004, most fans really want to see what Marcus Bennett can do.
After playing pick-up with Bennett, Mullis thinks he could be a key player next season.
“Marcus was really good,” he said. “He could shoot and handled the ball real well. I think he’ll be really good next season.”
