49ers Mens Hoops Staff Changes

Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Alan Major has announced a couple of changes to the men's basketball staff. Former 49ers guard Colby Lewis has been promoted from graduate manager to associate director of operations. Lewis replaces Stephen Doughton who resigned in order to pursue a professional non-basketball opportunity. Patrick Corrigan, who spent last season as a graduate manager, has been promoted to program assistant.

"We are extremely excited to promote Colby Lewis," Major said. "Colby's efforts and loyalty as a former player and now as a member of our staff has contributed to our success."

A fan favorite during his four-year career at Charlotte, Lewis played for the 49ers from 2009-13. He saw action in a career-high 17 games as a sophomore in 2011. As a senior, Lewis helped the 49ers win 21 games while capturing the Great Alaska Shootout title and earning a berth in the NIT.

"I would like to thank Coach Major and the Charlotte staff for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of this program as a player, Graduate Manager, and now as the Associate Director of Basketball Operations," Lewis said. "It is a dream come true to continue my career here at Charlotte, a place that is very special to me. I am eager to work and look forward to contributing to the program."

Lewis is replacing Doughton, who served as the associate director of basketball operations the last two years. Doughton joined the 49ers coaching staff after spending four years (2008-12) as a team manager at Charlotte.

"Stephen has been a terrific asset to our program for many years," Major said. "He has been a part of the 49ers men's basketball program as a manager and most recently in an operations role. While our working relationship has come to an end, our friendship will always be there. We wish him all the best."

In Doughton's two seasons on the staff, the 49ers captured the Great Alaska Shootout and Puerto Rico Tip-Off titles and earned a bid to the 2013 NIT. The 49ers defeated #10 Butler on the road as well in 2013. The 49ers have won 38 games, including a 21 wins season in 2013 which marked the program's first 20 wins season since 2007-08, and with another winning season in 2014, the 49ers posted back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time since 2007.

"I have enjoyed my time at Charlotte," Doughton said. "I would like to thank Coach Major and the rest of the staff for all they have done for me over the years. I wish the coaching staff and all of the players continued success."

Corrigan joined the 49ers program in 2013 after playing point guard for four years at Hampden-Sydney College. As a senior, Corrigan as a team captain played an integral role in helping Hampden-Sydney compile a 23-5 record.

"I'm extremely appreciative and excited about the opportunity to continue to learn under Coach Major and the staff," Corrigan said. "Charlotte is an outstanding university and I'm eager to get started."

The 49ers men's basketball program, which has averaged 19 wins over the last two seasons, returns 10 letterwinners and four starters off last season's Puerto Rico Tip-Off title team.
