Williams hits game-winner against North Texas
CHARLOTTE - Close games have not been too friendly for the Charlotte 49ers this season. Luckily, this game was similar to Thursday night, as the 49ers rallied from an eleven point deficit in the second half to defeat their C-USA opponent North Texas Saturday night, 76-74.
"Chemistry and just not giving up," said Charlotte guard Pierria Henry. "When you got a lot of adrenaline flowing once we got that one stop we needed and it was just like a re-run of Puerto Rico."
It was an offensive game throughout as both teams shot roughly fifty percent from the field with Terrence Williams leading his team with 16 points. Henry continues to guide his team recording 14 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.
In the final minute of the game, Henry grabbed a key steal which would seal the fate of the Mean Green. Henry dished the ball to Williams to hit the game-winning layup with no time left on the clock.
Charlotte improves to 12-5 overall, 3-1 in the Conference-USA standings.
North Texas recorded a total of 27 rebounds, but gathered a staggeringly-low four second chance points.
North Texas obtained the largest lead of the game with eleven points, but was reduced to 27 rebounds, 13 less than their team average.
Mike Thorne Jr., who was fresh off of a double-double in their last game against Tulsa, was held to five points and three rebounds sustaining 18 minutes. He played a huge role in the first few minutes of the game recording three rebounds.
In return, Willie Clayton recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the game.
Points in the paint tell the story as the 49ers managed to penetrate through the Mean Green with ease, scoring 38 points and 11 second chance points.
Brandan Walton led North Texas with 13 points. Colin Voss scored 8 of his 11 in the second half.
After their loss, North Texas falls to 10-8, 1-3 in Conference play as they go on to play UAB at home who lead the country in rebounds averaging 47.3, along with their leading scorer Chad Frazier who leads his team with 17.6 points per game.
With this win, Charlotte has now won four of their last five games, three of them at home.
The 49ers are now catching momentum as they will go on the road against their next conference opponent Louisiana Tech (15-3) who currently holds first place at 3-0 in the conference and is on a seven game win streak.
Tip-off time will begin at 7:30 P.M. ET, Thursday night, Jan. 23.
