Charlotte falls to UTSA in second C-USA matchup
SAN ANTONIO (TX) - The Charlotte 49ers (10-5) lost in their second Conference USA matchup of the season, 85-77 against the UTSA Roadrunners (6-9) in San Antonio on Saturday.
UTSA's eight point margin of victory was not indicative of how close the game was throughout, however, since the Roadrunners led the 49ers by 20 points with less than 12 minutes left in the game.
Charlotte then went on a 12-0 run in less than four minutes and cut UTSA's lead to eight points with just over eight minutes left in the game. Keon Lewis, UTSA's leading scorer, scored four straight points and the 49ers were too deflated to get back into the game after that point.
Devon Agusi led UTSA with 22 points and Edrico McGregor added 13 points of his own.
Turnovers and free throw percentage have been the telling statistics for the 49ers all season. Against UTSA, the 49ers turned the ball over 17 times and shot 61.5 percent from the charity stripe on 23 attempts.
The 49ers' leading scorer, Shawn Lester, played all 14 of his minutes in the first half and finished with only five points on the game.
Charlotte's Terrance Williams had 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Denzel Ingram led the 49ers in scoring with 17 points.
Charlotte's front line of Willie Clayton and Mike Thorne Jr. combined for only 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Charlotte 49ers are now 2-3 on the road this season and 1-1 in C-USA play.
They travel back home to face Tulsa on Thursday Jan. 16 and North Texas on Saturday Jan. 18 before embarking on another two game road trip.
