Lester leads Niners over Elon
The 49ers come in Friday for an early tipoff, as they hosted Elon in Charlotte.
After coming off a heartbreaking defeat against College of Charleston a few days ago, the 49ers were able to get back on the winning side of basketball, as they took down Elon 83-69 Friday night for their second win on the season.
The 49ers had five different players coming in that averaged double figures and they got the same hot shooting again against Elon, as they shot 50.9 percent from the field.
[db]Shawn Lester[/db] came off the bench and led all scorers with 24 points on 9 of 13 shooting and hit three from behind the arc.
[db]Willie Clayton[/db] had 12 points, [db]Mike Thomas Jr.[/db] had 14 points, [db]Terrence Williams[/db] had 16, and [db]Pierria Henry[/db] had 13 points in the game.
The 49ers only shot 30 percent from behind the arc but were able to take a major advantage in at the free throw line, hitting 23-of-33 from the line, compared to Elon, who only shot 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
Charlotte was able to take control of the board most of the night, almost doubling up the Phoenix 47-26 and having 12 offensive rebounds in the game. The one thing that might stand out in the box score though is the 19 turnovers the 49ersr had, something that will need to be cleaned up going down the road.
But what really sealed the win for Charlotte was the 18-0 run they went on in the second half, putting the game out of reach.
After Elon was able to take a 62-58 lead with a little over five minutes to go, the 49ers started their run near the end of the second half to put away the game. Charlotte hit their free throws at the end and came away with the 14 point win.
"You have to take your hats off to Elon they are a quality team," Charlotte coach Alan Major said. "This was a great win for us. I was really pleased with how we finished the game."
For Elon, [db]Austin Hamilton[/db] led the way with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, as Elon shot 41 percent from the floor but couldn't control the 49ers on the boards, as mentioned before.
Elon did shoot 10 of 27 from three, keeping it close somewhat in the game, but the 49ers were too much in the game and got their second victory on the season.
The diversity on this team has been great this season, as the rotation of the seven players have really worked out so far this season and will have to continue as the 49ers look to keep on winning.
There is no doubt that this team can score some points with the players they have, as Charlotte has scored over 80 points in all their games so far.
The 49ers will now hit the road to San Juan as they participate in the Puerto Rico tournament, as they have an early tipoff with Kansas State at 10:30 am.
The winner of that game will get the winner of Northeastern or Georgetown.
