Hamilton leads Louisiana Tech in blowout win over 49ers
RUSTON (LA) - The Charlotte 49ers (12-6) lost in their fifth conference game of the season 80-60 against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (16-4) on the road Thursday night.
Louisiana Tech's 20-point blowout win presented only a glimpse of the story as the Bulldogs' defense capitalized on every mistake by the 49ers' sloppy offensive play. The end result was an 11-point differential off of 24 Charlotte turnovers.
The Bulldogs second leading scorer, Alex Hamilton recorded a game-high 22 points with three rebounds and three assists.
Chris Anderson, Cordarious Johnson, and Jarrod Johnson scored a combined 30 points and 17 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
In the first half, the Bulldogs would lose their best defensive player Mychal Kyser, who would finish with six points. He was charged with a flagrant foul and ejected from the game.
Despite this blow, the Bulldogs managed to turn the tide against Charlotte in the second half as they fiercely attacked the paint against a struggling 49er defense. The Bulldogs scored 46 of their 80 points in the paint.
Charlotte's Pierria Henry stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. Willie Clayton recorded his ninth double-double this season with ten points and ten rebounds.
The 49er bench became their Achilles' heel tonight, shooting a dreadful 23 percent from the field compared to Louisiana Tech's bench, who shot 44 percent.
Charlotte's leading scorer Shawn Lester had ten points, five rebounds and two assists. Denzel Ingram had a frustrating night to say the least going zero for six from the field.
The Bulldogs' leading scorer Raheem Appleby did not play as he is out for six to eight weeks with an ankle injury.
The Charlotte 49ers dropped to 2-4 on the road this season and 3-2 in C-USA play.
On Saturday, the 49ers will travel again and head to the Tudor Fieldhouse to play Rice (5-13) at 8 P.M. ET to complete their two-game road trip.
