March 21, 2013The Charlotte 49ers (21-12) had four double-figure scorers but it was not enough as the 49ers saw their season end with a 75-66 loss at Providence (18-14) in the first round of the NIT.
"Our team has shown a lot of different faces this season," Charlotte coach Alan Major said. "Our effort tonight was indicative of our season as we fought to the end. I am very proud of our team."
E. Victor Nickerson led the 49ers with 14 points. He scored 10 points in the first half. Terrence Williams and Chris Braswell each scored 12 points. Braswell record his 76th double-figure scoring game in his final game as a Niner. Willie Clayton added 10 points.
Charlotte's bench behind the scoring of Chris Braswell and Ivan Benkovic's six points finished the game with a 24-2 advantage in bench scoring.
Providence led for the majority of the first half and the score was tied six times in the first half. With Providence leading 29-26 with 5:18 left in the half, the 49ers finished the half on a 10-4 run taking a 36-33 halftime lead. Clayton, Nickerson and Braswell scored during the 49ers run.
Providence scored four of the first five points of the second half tying the score at 37 with 18:27 on the clock.
Then, Charlotte went on a 7-0 capped off by a three-pointer from the wing by Williams which gave the 49ers a 44-37 lead with 15:21 left in the second half.
Over the next seven minutes, Providence went on a 17-4 run taking a 54-48 lead with 8:26 on the clock when Providence's Vincent Council knocked down a three. Benkovic answered Council's three with a three from the corner with 8:14 on the clock. Benkovic's three started a 49ers 7-0 run capped off by a short jumper by Braswell giving the 49ers a 55-54 lead with 6:33 on the clock.
However, that would be the 49ers last lead as Providence went on a 6-0 run over the next minute and half taking the lead for good.
