49ers look to rebound against Panthers
The Charlotte 49ers will take on the High Point University Panthers Wednesday in High Point. The 49ers lost their first game of the season Tuesday in a 5-0 shutout to the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
The game was postponed an hour and a half due to rain and began at 4:30.
The 49ers were able to get a solid performance from left-handed pitcher John Hamilton, who posted an impressive line of 6.2 innings, while only allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in his first game since the switch from bullpen to starter. To go with that, he also had 5 strikeouts and allowed a lone walk.
But, the 49ers couldn't get the bats going, as they only collected four hits and stranded eight base runners throughout the game. Senior Shane Basen was able to extend his hitting-streak to 11 games with a single in the fifth-inning while returning senior Justin Rolan was able to extend his career-long streak of reaching base to 28 with a walk in the third-inning.
The Panthers are 2-1 this season and have played all three of their games in Charleston, South Carolina as participants in the Citadel Memorial Challenge. The Panthers wins have come against George Mason and The Citadel, with a lone loss that came on their opening-season matchup against Kansas State.
Both wins have resulted from comebacks for the Panthers. A four run sixth-inning on Saturday and a five run eighth-inning on Sunday vaulted them into the win category. The Panthers went 28-31 last season, but had a home record of 18-18.
The 49ers will start junior college transfer left-handed pitcher Jason Harris on the mound at High Point University. In 2011 he had an ERA of 7.39 in seven starts, and in 2012 he had an ERA of 6.35 in 13 starts.
The first pitch will be thrown at 4 p.m.
